Braces move teeth, they do not clean them. Orthodontic appliances create additional areas where plaque can accumulate. This is particularly relevant around brackets and wires, but it also applies beneath removable aligners when teeth or trays are not clean before they are put back in.<\/p>\n

When plaque remains for too long, the gums may become red or bleed. Acids produced within dental plaque can remove minerals from the enamel. Visible white marks, tooth decay and gum problems are not inevitable consequences of braces. A consistent daily routine, regular checks and professional support can substantially reduce the risk.<\/p>\n

The foundation: brush thoroughly with fluoride twice a day<\/h2>\n

Brush at least twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste. Duration matters, but so does reaching every surface: the outside, the inside, the chewing surfaces and the gumline.<\/p>\n

After brushing, spit out the toothpaste but avoid rinsing immediately with a large amount of water. This allows the fluoride to remain on the tooth surfaces for longer. Your clinical team can recommend a toothbrush and additional aids suited to your appliance and individual oral health.<\/p>\n

An electric toothbrush can be useful, but it is not automatically better than a manual toothbrush used carefully. The best brush is the one that enables you to reach all the relevant areas reliably.<\/p>\n

Cleaning fixed and lingual braces<\/h2>\n

With fixed braces, plaque tends to collect where the brackets, teeth and gumline meet. Clean systematically above and below the wire. Small interdental brushes can help reach beneath the wire and between brackets.<\/p>\n

Lingual braces are attached to the inner surfaces of the teeth. This position is discreet from the outside but requires particular attention and good lighting during cleaning. Guide the brush slowly along the gumline and around every bracket. A compact brush or a suitable single-tufted brush can complement cleaning in difficult areas.<\/p>\n

If the gums bleed slightly at first, do not avoid cleaning them. Bleeding is often a sign of inflammation caused by plaque. Continue to brush gently and thoroughly, and arrange an assessment if it persists.<\/p>\n

Oral hygiene with clear aligners<\/h2>\n

Aligners are removed for eating and cleaning the teeth, providing direct access to the tooth surfaces. At the same time, trays can hold plaque and acids closely against the teeth if they are replaced after a meal without cleaning.<\/p>\n

When aligners are in place, water is the preferred drink. Remove the trays for other drinks and for meals. Clean the teeth before putting the aligners back in. The trays also need to be cleaned according to the instructions from your clinical team. Hot water is unsuitable because it can distort the plastic.<\/p>\n

A complete routine is not always possible when you are away from home. A small toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste and a protective case make it easier to maintain good habits while travelling or at work.<\/p>\n

Pay attention to the frequency of sugar and snacks<\/h2>\n

The risk of tooth decay is influenced not only by the amount of sugar consumed but also by how frequently the teeth are exposed to sugar and acids. Sweetened drinks, sweet coffee, energy drinks and frequent snacks extend the acidic periods in the mouth.<\/p>\n

Where possible, keep sugary foods to main meals and choose water between them. Very hard or sticky foods should also be avoided with fixed appliances because they can loosen brackets or distort wires.<\/p>\n

Dental and hygiene visits remain important<\/h2>\n

Orthodontic appointments do not replace regular examinations with your general dentist. While we monitor tooth movement and the appliance, general dental care assesses your wider oral health. Professional dental hygiene can remove plaque from difficult areas and help refine your home-cleaning technique.<\/p>\n

Warning signs you should not ignore<\/h2>\n

Contact the practice if the gums continue to bleed or become markedly swollen, if you notice pain in the gums, see new pale or dark areas on the teeth, or can no longer clean properly because part of the appliance has come loose.
